Week 4

Mathopoly - like monopoly, but with math challenges. We loved learning this math game.

Blog week  4

We are well underway with our learning in Term 2. It is encouraging to see many children farewelling their parents with such confidence. As we near the middle of the year, we encourage each child to arrive at school with a polite greeting to their teachers, as well as managing their own belongings such as bag, folder and water bottle. Allowing children to complete this simple morning routine will aid in building their independence and confidence.

Year one

Literacy

In writing this term we are having a wonderful time continuing to learn about narratives and the correct structure to follow. The narrative structure includes starting with an opener such as once upon a time. Introduce characters and setting. A series of events that lead to a problem. A solution to the problem and an ending. You can help support our writing program at home by reading narrative/ fairy tales and discussing with your child the important features as mentioned.

Students are continuing to build their phonics knowledge with a focus on digraphs. Digraphs explicitly taught include shthwhch, ckerir. Students are expected to recognise these sounds in written words, as well as apply them to their writing/spelling.

Numeracy.

In Numeracy there has been a focus on subtraction. The students are working towards solving subtraction word problems using the CUBES strategy.

There has also been a focus on shape, including 2d (flat shapes) and 3d (fat shapes)The students have been identifying shapes and their features. The focus 3d shapes are cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder, and sphere.

Science

This term the students are engaging in biological sciences. This includes describing in detail the features of living things as well as identifying the environmental needs of living things. They will learn about the lifecycle of plants and animals and their habitats.

****Reminder***

Super Scientist presentations start in next week in Week 5 (year one only)

We cannot wait to see all the amazing presentations and hope that there have been some trial runs occurring at home. Practising at home will ensure your child is able to present their experiment with confidence. Students will be being assessed on their oral language during the presentationPlease remember that your child will need to supply all necessary materials for their experiment. If you have any questions, please see me.

Pre-primary

Phonics

We are focusing on double consonants, ll, ff, ss, zz. Children learnt that when we read a double consonant i.e. 'ss' we just make the one sound. I.e. hiss h-i-ss. Then we will be moving onto reading initial blends, such as sl – slip, slop.   We continue to revise sight words .

Numeracy- Our focus in numeracy is addition and subtraction number stories up to the value of 10. An example of this is, if I had 1 blue pencil and 3 red pencils, how many pencils do I have altogether? Children can then represent this number story by drawing and writing the numbers.

HASS

We are continuing to look at geography and our local community, the features of map and why we belong to different communities, for example school, sport groups etc.

Science

We are beginning to look at Biological Science, which is all about living things.
